Rendering fats is an old, timeless skill, much of society has forgotten. It ensures the entire is used and nothing goes to waste, not to mention the antioxidants and vitamins that can be found in animal fats.
It’s not a hard skill to learn either, it’s quite easy to render fat, you are melting fat slowly over heat, that’s it.
Lard is pork fat, and is wonderful for frying with and baking. Before Crisco came out, most households utilized this natural fat.
In the video I share, I use leftover pork chop fat from hogs we raised and processed, it is also why I call this scrap lard.
To make purified lard, it will be the same process, you just won’t be using fat that has been cooked.
And if you ask why, utilize the pork chop fat? If you can use your scraps as more resources for your famil,y it creates resiliency.
It also ensures again nothing goes to waste. Having a zero waste mentality helps the environment, your wallet, and your skill set—much of consumer culture has forgotten this.
